One of two

The brief, in her words

“Empty rental, high ceilings, dog. I have a sofa I like and no idea what goes with it. I do not want it to look like a showroom.”

Three constraints fell out of that: the sofa stayed, the palette had to hide a dog, and nothing could be so precious that a rental deposit was at risk. The plan was drawn around the sofa on day two and never moved.

One revision round was used, on day nine: a paler rug swapped for the same wool in a darker weave, and the shelving moved to keep the window clear.

What actually changed

Twenty-three lines,four of them hers.

  1. KeptThe three-seat sofa, a floor lamp, two framed prints. The palette was built to suit them rather than to replace them.
  2. BoughtNineteen pieces across nine suppliers, $4,180 in total, the largest single line being the rug at $740.
  3. MovedShelving off the window wall, the sofa turned ninety degrees, and the table brought eighteen inches closer than it had been.
  4. SkippedThe armchair on the list. She bought it four months later, from the same line, at the price we had found.
